Bacterial Toxins
Bacterial toxin testing plays a critical role in protecting consumers by identifying harmful toxins that can remain in food even after bacteria are no longer present. R-Biopharm Australia’s testing solutions provide rapid, reliable detection of foodborne bacterial toxins using validated immunological technologies, helping food manufacturers and laboratories investigate contamination events, strengthen food safety programs and maintain compliance with industry requirements. Designed for routine laboratory workflows, our portfolio delivers dependable performance across a wide range of food products and production environments.
When the Bacteria Are Gone, the Risk May Remain
Some foodborne bacteria produce toxins that remain active even if the microorganisms themselves have been eliminated. These toxins can still pose a significant health risk, making direct toxin detection an essential component of food safety testing. R-Biopharm Australia’s bacterial toxin testing solutions help laboratories identify these hazards quickly, enabling faster investigations, informed decision-making and greater confidence in product safety.

Common Bacteria Producing Toxins
Species such as Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus hyicus, and Staphylococcus intermedius produce one or more heat-stable proteins that act as enterotoxins (SET). These toxins are major causes of food poisoning, alongside Salmonella and Campylobacter. A population of 5 x 10⁵ cells of enterotoxin-producing S. aureus strains per gram of food is typically required to cause intoxication. However, other studies indicate that only 100 – 200ng of Staphylococcus enterotoxins can trigger symptoms.
SET intoxications are frequently linked to a variety of foods, including pasta, meat products, ham, pies, chicken meat products, fish and fish products, milk and dairy products, ice cream, egg products, salads, pastries, and cake fillings. The enterotoxins from serological groups A, B, C, D, and E are particularly significant.
Another significant toxin-producing bacterium is enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC). These bacteria produce toxic substances known as verotoxin or shiga toxin, and are therefore also referred to as verotoxin-producing E. coli (VTEC) or shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). Infections with STEC/VTEC are among the most common food-related bacterial diseases and can be fatal. Common sources of contamination include raw meat and unpasteurized dairy products.
Targeted Detection for Foodborne Toxins
Reliable toxin analysis requires highly specific methods capable of detecting biologically active toxins in complex food samples. R-Biopharm Australia’s portfolio includes validated RIDASCREEN® ELISA assays for the detection of bacterial toxins, providing laboratories with sensitive, reproducible results suitable for routine food safety testing, contamination investigations and quality assurance programs. These assays support efficient workflows while delivering the analytical confidence required for critical food safety decisions.

Supporting Food Safety Across Every Production Stage
Bacterial toxin testing supports food safety throughout the production process, from raw material assessment and in-process quality control to finished product verification and outbreak investigations. Suitable for dairy products, meat, seafood, ready-to-eat meals and other high-risk foods, R-Biopharm Australia’s solutions help manufacturers verify food safety controls, support HACCP programs and minimise the risk of contaminated products reaching consumers.
Technology That Streamlines Toxin Analysis
Reliable toxin testing depends on both high-quality assays and dependable laboratory instrumentation. The ThunderBolt® automated ELISA platform enables laboratories to automate bacterial toxin testing, reducing manual handling while improving consistency and throughput. Combined with R-Biopharm’s validated immunoassays, this integrated workflow helps laboratories deliver accurate, reproducible results efficiently, whether performing routine monitoring or investigating suspected contamination events.
