Fish Species
Fish species identification is essential for verifying seafood authenticity, preventing food fraud and ensuring compliance with food labelling regulations. R-Biopharm Australia’s molecular testing solutions use advanced real-time PCR technology to accurately identify fish species in raw materials and processed products, helping laboratories, seafood producers and regulatory organisations protect product integrity and maintain consumer confidence. Designed for reliable, sensitive detection, our assays support efficient seafood verification across a wide range of applications.
Reliable Fish Species Identification
Accurate fish species identification is critical for maintaining product authenticity throughout the seafood supply chain. Whether verifying premium seafood products, detecting species substitution or supporting import and export requirements, molecular testing provides laboratories with a dependable method for confirming species identity. R-Biopharm Australia’s assays deliver sensitive and specific detection across a variety of sample types, enabling consistent results even in processed food products where visual identification is no longer possible.

Monitoring fish species improves consumer transparency through truthful labelling, supports compliance with EU regulations, and preserves the integrity of premium products. It also helps detect mislabelling, protecting both consumers and reputable suppliers. Advanced detection methods enable precise identification even in processed products, ensuring reliable, accurate results.

Why is Pangasius Detection Important?
The Pangassidae family, which is composed of the Pangasius and Helicophagus genera, is indigenous to Southeast Asia. These fish are amenable to aquaculture practices, and are farmed heavily in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. The two main species of farmed Pangassids are Pangasius bocourti (basa) and Pangasius hypothalamus. Production of Pangasius species has increased from 10,000 tons in 1995 to over 1.1 million tons in 2008, with a large percentage of these fish shipped to Europe and the United States. As the volume of Pangasius imports has increased, so have the incidents of substitution, wherein a Pangasius filet is sold as grouper, snapper, U.S. catfish, or other variety of more expensive filets. In order to insure that consumers are not receiving misbranded products, and to detect incidences of substitution, it is important to be able to differentiate Pangasius filets from those of other fish.

Purpose of the EZ Pangasius Assay
The EZ Pangasius assay is an easy-to-use field test that will quickly identify cooked or raw filets as Pangasius. It was designed to positively identify filets from Pangasius while not reacting to filets from other fish species.
